July Afternoon

“I can hire someone to clean the house, or mow the lawn,

but if I don’t take my own nap, who will do it for me?”   Quilting Pam

A brilliant red butterfly pulls

my granddaughter back

and forth in the side yard.

Losing interest,

the black tufted cat pads across the roof,

vanishing into sandpaper sky.

I am lost in the blossom of mid-day,

yellow grass beneath my head,

flat and dry as pavement,

presumptions roses reaching

ever outward – trellis to gutter

and then only warm air.

Removing the penknife from my pocket

I carve a hole in the afternoon,

and crawl inside.
