Straight Out Scribes


Dr. V.S. Chochezi and Staajabu are a unique mother and daughter poetry team known as “Straight Out Scribes.” They have read their original work at numerous venues in California and nationally. They are widely published, have received many honors and awards and have self-published seven books of poetry and two CD compilations. Their newest anthology is titled “Mud Cloth Roots”, and is available from straightoutscribes.com <http://straightoutscribes.com> , amazon.com and at any venue where they are sharing their work.

In addition to their writing and performance accomplishments, this mother daughter poetic duo has produced and coordinated many consciousness-raising events and fund-raisers in Sacramento since they first decided to make it their home in 1991. They are often referred to as activist poets and have spent the past 25 years working on the campaign to free Mumia Abu-Jamal and the MOVE 9.

Staajabu was born in Philadelphia, PA and raised in Camden, NJ. She is a writer, editor, producer, poet, health advocate, prison rights activist, graphic artist and craftsperson.

Daughter, Dr. V.S. Chochezi was born in Riverside, CA and raised in Camden, NJ. She earned a BA in journalism from Delaware State College, an MA in Communication Studies from California State University Sacramento, and recently earned a doctorate in Education from Drexel University in Sacramento.  V.S.  is a writer, poet, editor, photojournalist, publications specialist, and college professor.
